Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Accused By Redditors Of Being ‘Frame-By-Frame Copy’ Of Spanish Film Champions
Aamir Khan Productions released the trailer for RS Prasanna’s coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par on Tuesday evening. Although it serves as a spiritual sequel to Aamir Khan’s 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par, a lesser-known detail is that it’s an official remake of Javier Fesser’s 2018 Spanish film Campeones.
A Redditor compared the trailers of both films, highlighting striking similarities. These include Aamir’s coach character drinking while driving and crashing his car into a police van in the middle of the road, mirroring Javier Gutierrez’s character in the original. Both characters are then court-ordered to coach a group of mentally challenged kids for a basketball tournament. Other parallels include the coach throwing a basketball directly into the face of one of the kids, with others shielding their faces in the following shot. The supporting characters, such as the protagonist’s friend and mother, are consistent in both films, though the wife (played by Genelia D’Souza in Sitaare Zameen Par) does not appear in the trailer for the Spanish original.
Looks like SZP is a frame-by-frame copy of the Spanish hit Campeones(2023).

“After the Forest Gump fiasco, he should have stayed away from remakes or adaptations,” remarked another Redditor, alluding to Aamir’s previous film, Advait Chandan’s Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), the official Hindi remake of Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 iconic film Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks. Laal Singh Chaddha flopped at the box office.
“Perfectionist in copying the film frame by frame,” a Redditor claimed, while another noted, “Look at his filmography again. He has remade the godfather, kramer vs kramer, on the waterfront, forrest gump. A lot of them have scenes lifted frame by frame. I still love Ghulam, akele hum etc. The point is he’s had a lot of practice,” referencing Aamir’s films Aatank Hi Aatank (1995), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), Ghulam (1998), and Laal Singh Chaddha.

However, many others came to Aamir’s defense. “Official remake hai bhai toh of course usme konsi nayi baat hai,” wrote a Redditor. “You’re acting like people in India have all seen Champions and it’s a massive hit here. No one gives a shit if it’s a remake as no one has seen the original, all that matters is if it’s a good film,” another argued.
