Kangana Ranaut Says She Was Forced To Sell Her Personal Property As She Had ‘Staked’ Them On Emergency
Kangana Ranaut recently revealed that she was compelled to sell her personal property in Mumbai due to the postponement of her directorial venture Emergency. The film, in which she portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was initially slated for a September 6 release but faced delays after not receiving clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Speaking at News18 Chaupal, Kangana shared the challenges she faced, saying, “”I had staked my personal property on this film, which was supposed to come in theatres. Now it is not releasing, so the property is there, to be sold off in difficult times.”
Emergency, which Kangana has also written and co-produced, is a political drama that has run into multiple roadblocks. The actor-turned-filmmaker expressed her frustration with the CBFC’s handling of the project, calling for a reevaluation of censorship in India. “The Censor Board has become outdated in the age of modern technology. I’ve spoken about this before in Parliament. It’s not films that need the most censorship; it’s OTT platforms.”
Kangana emphasized the lack of control over what people, especially children, are exposed to on digital platforms. “The content available on OTT or even YouTube is alarming. We argue so much with the Censor Board about violence or sensitive scenes in films, but the unregulated content on OTT is a far greater concern. Our film was asked to make many cuts, yet these platforms show far more graphic material without restrictions.”
Emergency has also sparked controversy, with Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accusing the film of misrepresenting the community. The matter is now in court, and Kangana has faced protests in Punjab. “People are burning my effigies, and some groups are provoking others against me,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Kangana expressed disappointment with the lack of support from her colleagues in the film industry. “I feel completely isolated. No one from the industry has stood by me through this,” she added.
Emergency is produced by Zee Entertainment and boasts an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Vishak Nair. The film’s release date is now uncertain, as the controversy continues.
