Karan Johar Calls Takht His ‘Best Screenplay Yet’; Confirms It’s Still In Works

Karan Johar’s much-talked-about historical drama Takht may have gone quiet for a while, but for fans and film lovers, it’s far from forgotten. Announced back in 2020 with an ensemble cast that reads like a who’s who of Bollywood, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor, the film was set to hit theatres in December 2021. A regal teaser, dramatic visuals, and the promise of a gripping saga had everyone buzzing. And then, just like that, Takht disappeared from Dharma Productions’ slate.

For years, there was radio silence. No updates, no press releases, just speculation. But now, Karan Johar has finally opened up. In a recent chat with Galatta Plus, he addressed the big question: what happened to Takht? While he didn’t spill all the details, he did say that “multiple factors”, ranging from logistical hurdles to the sheer scale of the production, led to the project being put on hold. The good news? It’s not cancelled. Just paused.

That one admission has reignited hope. For fans who’d been dreaming of seeing Bollywood’s biggest stars in a period drama packed with power struggles, ambition, betrayal, and family drama, this was a much-needed spark. The teaser’s imagery of a throne wasn’t just symbolic, it represented a film that aimed to be larger than life, much like the Mughal-era saga it’s inspired by.

The silence around Takht had disappointed many, especially given Karan Johar’s knack for delivering grand cinematic experiences. After all, this is the filmmaker who gave us the emotional sweep of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and the romantic melancholy of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Takht, with its historical setting and rich characters, seemed tailor-made for his storytelling style.

In the meantime, Johar hasn’t been idle. He returned to directing with 2023’s feel-good hit Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, and he’s now working on his first action film. As a producer, his upcoming titles include Dhadak 2, Naagzilla, and Tu Meri Main Tera.

Still, it’s Takht that continues to stir emotions among cinephiles. And while the throne may be waiting, it hasn’t been forgotten. As Karan himself suggested, sometimes the biggest stories just need the right moment to be told. And for Takht, that moment might still come.
