Param Sundari Review: Music Drives Sidharth Malhotra And Janhvi Kapoor’s Love Story

Param Sundari directed by Tushar Jalota and led by Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor has been much in the news for the controversy around the portrayal of some of its characters, the stereotypes and the implications of it. However, the film focus on the romance and the comedy aspects with a soundtrack that is fresh for the first time in a long time. The love story is simple and picks up from some of the Bollywood’s classic revamped with time.

The film begins with Param played by Siddharth Malhotra narrating about how his life is dictated by data and follows a fixed routine as a business man. The routine being he invests his father’s money in new star ups which don’t work. However, just when his father is about to give up on him, Param comes across an app idea which will help people find their soulmates. To convince his father, Param decides to prove the app is worth investing by setting out to find his own soulmate.

With the help of the app creator, Param finds out his soulmate is somewhere in Kerala and sets out to win her heart. Played by Janhvi Kapoor, Sundari is the homey town girl who everyone loves and adores. She runs a small homestay to keep the family afloat and teaches dance for part time which is her true passion. The app brings them together but it is up to Param to prove to her that he is her soulmate to his father that she is his.

Both characters have been given a good backstory and it reflects in Janhvi’s performance, but Siddharth Malhotra’s character comes off arrogant and spoilt to the point that the actor feels rigid. It may be the point, but it does affect the chemistry between the two. Many scenes between Param and Sundari feel genuine but others come off forced, which can be blamed on very basic dialogues. Manjot Singh brings the best comic timing to the film with his one liners, even during the emotional moments his character often comes to the rescue.

Visually the film is pleasing to watch and the soundtrack does add a good layer to the story. For most, it is the music that drives the romance forward despite the wafer thin screenplay. The makers could have spent more time during development to explore the characters and used those extra minutes of the short runtime. The film clocks in at 136 minutes and has enough time to add some bits for both characters and to set the tone of the film. The supporting actors and the world-building for Param and Sundari is there, but more scenes surrounding them in their own environment would have make them more fun.

Overall, Param Sundari’s driving force is the music with classic aesthetically Bollywood moments. It does offer a cute, fresh story based in today AI set up of dating apps, but the details haven’t been flushed out enough.
