Important Care Tips
Azaleas can be propagated through seeds or cuttings, though growing them from seeds is time-consuming and less common. During summer, healthy branches can be cut and planted in soil or water to encourage root development. If growing in a pot, ensure it is at least 12 inches deep.
Hoshiyaar Singh notes that Azaleas prefer light shade and a cool climate, as intense sunlight can scorch the leaves, making morning and evening sunlight ideal. The optimal temperature range for growth is between 10°C and 25°C.
Choosing the Right Location
Azaleas should be planted in a partially shaded area, away from direct sunlight. They thrive in shady gardens, balconies, or pots. Soil quality is crucial, as these plants grow best in acidic soil. Well-draining, sandy-loam soil is ideal, and incorporating organic fertilisers like manure, coco peat, and vermicompost promotes healthy growth.
Proper Watering Techniques
Keep the soil slightly moist but avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause root rot. During summer, water lightly every day, reducing frequency in winter. Adding acidic fertilisers, such as lemon peel compost, once a month is beneficial. Bone meal fertiliser can also be used during the flowering season in March.
Preventing Pests and Diseases
Azaleas are prone to fungal infections, insects, and aphids. Spraying neem oil effectively prevents these issues. Use organic pesticides or fungicides only when necessary. If the leaves turn yellow, it may indicate high soil pH – balancing it with an acidic fertiliser can help maintain plant health.
